RE: Album#1-David Tao

David's debut album released in 1997. Let me c...I was 10 years old at that time. I only know about him when i bought his 2nd album. But that doesn't mean I ain't a die-hard fan of him. From what I know, this album is considered one of the pioneers of R&B music in the chinese industry. And since then, the wave of American rooted music hits the shores of Asia. Everyone was in high fever of R&B and soul music back then. And they call him R&B king. Okay, I think I'll proceed into the album now, or else I'll start blabbering...

The songs in this album are centred in R&B style. After all, David is based in LA, California. Airport in 10.30 is one of my favourites. The story that revolves around the airport certainly made this song interesting. Wondered if this song was composed in the airport itself? Anyway, back to the other songs. I personally enjoyed the attraction of this album, I Love You. It's a beautiful love ballad with a tinge of R&B flavour, though it's chinese title translates as 'Love is very simple', the song is never that simple. Maybe melodically and rhythmically, but somehow in a way, it seemed to me as 'not simple'.  Spring Wind is definitely a fresh and nice track to listen to, which consists only of David's vocal, a cappella style. Listening to that song made me realised that oldies can also be creatively turned into a modern hit song, only by the hands of amazing musicians like David. I have also a craving for the song, Do I Do I, especially when they included Minus 6 Take 3, a small part of David singing with another guy (I forgot who's that) =p and he certainly surprised me back challenging the higher parts. I never thought guys could do that. Well, maybe i wasn't exposed much on other singers at that time. Bastard is really an interesting piece, which adds a little humour to describe how much hatred and torture one experienced by the doings of another. It's not totally a 'rude or dirty' song like what the others say because the only word that might irritate the really decent ones is 'bastard' or in chinese, 'wang ba dan'. Nevertheless, I cannot imagine myself singing this song loudly into my parents ears. Either a lecture or a pinch on the ear, that's what i'll get.

I can't be commenting on all the songs, my words might turn boring in the end. But believe me, if you want to get to know the 'godfather', formerly a 'king' (if you get what i mean), take it slowly step by step, starting with this album. Then you'll know what am I saying in this little post.

Great.. Just great.. I forgot to mention about Blue Moon.. That's one of the best songs i've ever known! Must have suffered from STM--short term memory..Hehe, anyway, Blue Moon is very very soothing.. I can imagine walking by the moonlit beach and the waves gently splashing onto the sandy beach.. Tell you something, i cried one day when i listen to that song.. It must have brought out the depression in me.. Okay, never mind that..

David Tao ...... the debut album of the recently crowned godfather of the chinese music industry is one of the well produced album even till now. The award winning album not only feature the modern R&B songs but also the creativity of a musician which is rarely found even in this new millennium. Produced, composed, arranged, programmed, and sung by David Tao, this album is the beginning of a new trend in the Chinese music industry.

Besides Airport, I Love You, Do I Do I, Bastard, Blue Moon and Spring Wind, this album is also made up of Our Love, Yes No Song, Everything's Gone (a.k.a Liu Sha) and Say Goodbye. In addition to the post above, Bastard is a song composed by David after his newly bought car was scratched by a stranger. This song is merely his way of expressing his anger and not a song to scold a particular person.

Our Love is a R&B song with unique arrangement and lyrics. Using traditional Chinese instruments, Our Love sets a sad atmosphere in the song added by its touching lyrics, talking about the love relationship of teenagers at the age of 17. The song begins with a Malaysian Language OS which goes, 'Kembalilah, itu saja sayangku. Terima kasih.' (Direct translation, 'Come back, that's all, my love. Thank you').

Yes No Song, Everything's Gone and Say Goodbye are R&B songs with simple tunes and rhythm that suit young adults. Being able to hit the high and low keys, his vocal ability is of no comparison to others. In short, this album is so perfect in its production that anyone would not believe it if they know that this album is a debut album. This album, in my opinion is an album with the standard higher than the first album of an artist. Many artists might be able to meet this standard in their 3rd or 4th album but David had already reached the standard in his 1st album.

David Tao has progressed over the years and now, his music is becoming more and more complex. Since, the trend of the music industry is now more focused on simple songs,  many wonder about David's ability to meet the market. If you ask me, I'll say, David had been there and done it. This is album is the proof to his abilities.

Thanks dav10 714.. So, tht's how the song Bastard got into his compositions.. Yeah, Our Love brings out the sad atmosphere.. I wonder who's behind the voice of the OS phrase. Is she a friend of David or one of the production crews? Nice voice there and it suits as the opening of tht song.. :)
